Tooth Profile
The cross-sectional shape of a gear tooth is called the tooth profile.
There are three different tooth profiles available which include an involute tooth profile formed by an involute curve, a cycloid tooth profile formed by a cycloid curve, and the trochoid tooth profile formed by a trochoid curve. The involute tooth profile is the most commonly used profile today.
These are the advantages of using gears with an involute tooth profile :
- It offers a smoother rotation, even if there is a slight error on the center distance between two gears
- Custom tooling readily available
- The ability to machine gears with different numbers of teeth with a single tool
