Chordal thickness

What is chordal thickness?

There are several methods to measure gear tooth thickness, including chordal thickness measurement, span measurement, and over pin (ball) measurement.
The chordal thickness in chordal thickness measurement is the tooth thickness of one tooth expressed as the length of the chord between two symmetrical points on the tooth surface on both sides (straight line). Generally, the two points are taken on the intersection of the tooth surface and the pitch circle.
In the chordal thickness measurement, the tooth thickness on the pitch circle is measured using a tooth thickness caliper based on the tooth tip circle, but it is difficult to measure with high accuracy.
The tooth thickness of a single tooth, expressed as the length of the arc on the pitch circle, is called the circular thickness.
