Intersecting axes gears

Intersecting axes gears - Gear Nomenclature

The positional relationship between the two axes on a pair of gears can be broadly classified into three types: parallel axis gears, intersecting axis gears, and nonparallel and nonintersecting axis gears.

Parallel axes are two parallel shafts and are commonly used for spur/helical gears.
Intersecting axes are for two shafts that will intersect at a certain point and angle.
Nonparallel and nonintersecting axes are two shafts that neither intersect nor are parallel to each other.

Intersecting axes gears, one of the three types, include straight bevel gears, spiral bevel gears, miter gears, spiral miter gears, and zerol bevel gears. These types of gears transmit power through rolling contact with minimal slippage, which results in having a high transmission efficiency of 98.0% - 99.0%.
