Face Gear

What is a face gear ?

A face gear is a pair of gears where a spur or helical gear serves as a pinion, and a disk-shaped gear with teeth cut on the end face that meshes with the pinion. The disk-shaped gear is sometimes called a face gear by itself.

The axis of the face gear and the axis of the mating gear may be intersecting or they may be nonparallel and nonintersecting.
Face gears are relatively easy to cut and can be used in place of bevel gears or hypoid gears, but they are not suitable for transmitting large amounts of power.
