End Relief (Relieving)

End Relief (Relieving) - Gear Nomenclature

End relief and crowning are both used to correct the tooth trace to prevent tooth contact from being concentrated at the edge of the tooth width. This can be due to uneven teeth contact caused by assembly errors, deflection caused by loading during operation, manufacturing errors, and many other factors.
End relief is a method in which the tooth thickness is reduced only at the ends of the tooth width without reducing the center. Crowning, on the other hand, reduces the tooth thickness from the center to both ends of the tooth width to create an appropriate bulge in the tooth trace direction.
