What is the direction of rotation of gears?
In the case of spur and helical gears, the direction of rotation of a meshing pair of gears is opposite.
If the direction of rotation of one gear in a pair of gears is clockwise, the direction of rotation of the other gear is counterclockwise.
In the case of internal gears, which are parallel axis gears like spur and helical gears, the direction of rotation of the internal gear and pinion is the same, and in the case of meshing worm gears, the direction of rotation depends on the helix direction of tooth.
An idler gear is a gear that is inserted between the driving and driven gears in a gear train. It does not affect the speed transmission ratio of the gear train, but it can change the direction of rotation.
In the case of a two-stage gear train as shown in the figure below,
- The direction of rotation of Gear1 and Gear2 is opposite
- Because the gear shafts are identical, the direction of rotation of Gear 2 and Gear 3 is the same
- The direction of rotation of Gear 3 and Gear 4 is opposite
