Base pitch - Gear Nomenclature
The length of the arc between the starting points of the involute curves of adjacent teeth in the base circle of a gear, that is, the circumference of the base circle divided by the number of teeth, is called the base pitch. This base pitch is equal to the normal pitch.
For a pair of gears, the condition for meshing is that the base pitch is equal for both gears.
